The suspension in mobile broadband services has caused the loss of about Rs.1.6 billion to the telecom companies and the government also has to suffer the financial loss of more than Rs.570 million which could not be achieved as the revenue from the telecom companies.

The individuals who are attached with the businesses such as Careem, InDrive, Foodpanad etc. also faced the financial losses during the last couple of days. Most of the social media sources like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube remained partially or fully closed.

The CEO of Jazz, Aamir Ibrahim said in a tweet that the closure of internet is not a solution to anything. It creates more problems than it solves. “For almost 24 hours, 125 million Pakistanis have been without mobile internet – a critical tool in emergency & productivity.”

Muhammad Zohaib Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) strongly criticized the measure of closing the internet services. He said, “Internet is our life, our office, our communications infrastructure and the IT industry cannot operate without it.”

He said that the IT industry was already under the pressure due to the decline in?exports and current political situation. He demanded that the internet services may immediately be restored.

Zuhaib Khan added, “No international buyer or importer will take this excuse that we need a few days leverage due to the unavailability of the internet – and to be precise, credibility and? goodwill achieved through timely delivery is everything in the IT export market as once a client or order is gone, it is impossible to regain them.”

After the Covid-19, the trend of ‘work from home’ has increased in the country but due to the closure of internet services and law and order situation, neither it is possible to go to the offices nor to work from home.

Lahore High Court’s Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh sought replies from the federal government and PTA by May 22 in a plea seeking directions to restore the internet services and resume the operation of social media platforms.
