The installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at highway toll plazas has received the approval of the Sindh cabinet and will cost Rs. 1.567 billion. The choice was made on Thursday during a cabinet meeting presided over by Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh.

Smart security cameras will be installed at all Sindh entry and exit points as part of the ANPR camera system project.

The cameras will provide live photos of the front seat occupants and car registration details to the Central Police Office’s monitoring mainframe. The vehicles and occupants will be recognised by the face and licence plate recognition technology, facilitating quick response.

Identifying illicit cars would aid in the detection and prevention of crime, the cabinet was informed. In order to stop terrorism, it would also alert the police when a questionable car entered the province. The device will identify suspects connected to a car using facial recognition and tracking.

Due to the sensitive nature of this initiative, according to the CM, Sindh police would carry it out through the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation on a government-to-government (G-2-G) basis.

CM instructed the chief secretary to appoint a consultant for the project and award its contract within a month after the cabinet gave its approval.
