The glass bangle manufacturing industry in Hyderabad is facing a severe crisis, with around 80% of the 48 small and large units shutting down due to the adverse impact of exorbitant gas tariffs and high inflation.

The President of the Hyderabad Glass Bangle Manufacturers Association, Mohammad Saleem Khan, warns that without significant and immediate government subsidies on gas tariffs, the industry may collapse entirely, leading to the unemployment of 250,000 to 300,000 people associated with it.

Before the recent gas tariff increase, 48 units were operational, producing 50,000 to 100,000 bunches of glass bangles per day. However, due to the high gas rates, production substantially declined, and around 80% of units were forced to close. The increased gas bills are posing a significant financial burden on small units, making it difficult for them to continue operations.

Additionally, the industry is facing challenges in passing on the increased costs to customers, affecting both local sales and exports. The glass bangle industry plays a crucial role in the region, employing numerous home-based workers and contributing to exports.

The Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, along with industry representatives, urges the caretaker government to review the decision to increase gas tariffs, emphasizing the industry’s traditional significance and the need for immediate measures to ensure its survival.

The situation highlights the broader challenges faced by traditional industries in Pakistan, requiring comprehensive economic planning and support from policymakers to address their unique concerns and sustain their contributions to the national economy.
