Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) disclosed the discovery of gas reserves in an exploratory well in the Sindh district of Dadu.

The company announced the news on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The discovery was made by PPL from the exploratory well Rayyan-1 in Kirthar Block (2667-7), District Dadu, Sindh Province. M/s. Polish Oil and Gas Company, PKN ORLEN Pakistan Branch, with a 70% working interest, and its joint venture partner Pakistan Petroleum Limited, with a 30% working interest, operates the well.

In the midst of rapidly depleting foreign exchange reserves, the news is good for Pakistan, which relies heavily on imported LNG to meet its needs.

“This discovery will add hydrocarbon reserves of the company, contribute to reducing the energy demand and supply gap in the country, and will save significant foreign exchange for the country through indigenous hydrocarbon production,” PPL company secretary, Ali Jaffar, said in the PSX notice.

Rayyan-1 was drilled to a depth of roughly 2,446 meters on December 5, 2022. The well had a drill stem test (DST), and initially, it flowed gas at 7.8 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd ) with a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 1,920 pounds per square inch (PSI) at 28/64 “Size of the choke.

Rayyan-1 was completed successfully and concluded the completion integrity test following the DST. As a result, a frac job was performed, and the well flowed gas at a rate of 12.88 mmscfd at a WHFP of 3,190 PSI at 28/64 “Size of the choke.

PPL discovered gas and condensate from the exploration well Shahpur Chakar North X-1 in Block 2568-18 (Gambat South), District Sanghar, Sindh, in October 2022.

PPL operates the Block 2568-18 (Gambat South) EL with a 65 percent working interest, alongside joint venture partners Government Holdings Private Limited and Asia Resources Oil Limited, who have a 25 percent and a 10% working interest, respectively.

It is to be mentioned that PPL was founded in Pakistan in 1950 with the primary goals of exploring, prospecting, developing, and producing oil and natural gas resources.
