The federal government has begun work on a central highway project in the Narowal district’s Shakargarh tehsil.

The foundation stone for the multi-village project was recently set, underlining the government’s commitment to upgrading the area’s transit network. The central route from ‘Jassar Garrison to Sialkot Cantt,’ intends to improve mobility and cut travel time for local residents.

According to sources, the project will cost over 70 billion rupees, signalling a huge investment in the region’s infrastructure. The highway’s construction, which would cover a distance of 70 kilometres, is expected to be completed in three years.

Furthermore, residents expressed their happiness with the project, anticipating that it will generate new business opportunities and help?the overall growth of the neighbourhood.

Officials emphasised the project’s potential positive impact, as it is intended to boost transit amenities and accessibility, supporting socioeconomic growth in the region.

In other news, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been struggling to complete the Margalla Avenue project by the deadline, prompting fears about potential delays and increased traffic congestion in Islamabad.

The major?road construction project, estimated to cost Rs4 billion, intends to connect the newly built Margalla Avenue with E-11.

The 5.5km road project, which began in December 2022, has a six-month completion target scheduled for June 20 of this year. But with only 45% of the work performed thus far, it appears exceedingly doubtful that the CDA will make the statutory date.

“While we are making every effort to complete this project, meeting the June 20 deadline is nearly impossible,” said a CDA official.

The official identified service shifting as the primary cause of the delay. The Margalla Avenue project entails building a 5.5km road from Sector D-12, where Margalla Avenue currently ends, to Khayabani-Iqbal in Sector E-11.

In addition, the proposal calls for the building of a flyover and an interchange at E-11, with the goal of alleviating potential traffic congestion in the area.
