حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ النَّمَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ. ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ الْمَعْنَى وَاحِدٌ وَالْإِخْبَارُ فِي حَدِيثِ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ الصَّادِقُ الْمَصْدُوقُ إِنَّ خَلْقَ أَحَدِكُمْ يُجْمَعُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فَيُؤْمَرُ بِأَرْبَعِ كَلِمَاتٍ فَيُكْتَبُ رِزْقُهُ، وَأَجَلُهُ، وَعَمَلُهُ، ثُمَّ يُكْتَبُ شَقِيٌّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ، ثُمَّ يُنْفَخُ فِيهِ الرُّوحُ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلَّا ذِرَاعٌ أَوْ قِيدُ ذِرَاعٍ فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ، فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلَّا ذِرَاعٌ أَوْ قِيدُ ذِرَاعٍ فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ، فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا .
عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں ہم سے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ( آپ صادق اور آپ کی صداقت مسلم ہے ) بیان فرمایا: تم میں سے ہر شخص کا تخلیقی نطفہ چالیس دن تک اس کی ماں کے پیٹ میں جمع رکھا جاتا ہے، پھر اتنے ہی دن وہ خون کا جما ہوا ٹکڑا رہتا ہے، پھر وہ اتنے ہی دن گوشت کا لوتھڑا رہتا ہے، پھر اس کے پاس ایک فرشتہ بھیجا جاتا ہے اور اسے چار باتوں کا حکم دیا جاتا ہے: تو وہ اس کا رزق، اس کی عمر، اس کا عمل لکھتا ہے، پھر لکھتا ہے: آیا وہ بدبخت ہے یا نیک بخت، پھر وہ اس میں روح پھونکتا ہے، اب اگر تم میں سے کوئی جنتیوں کے عمل کرتا ہے، یہاں تک کہ اس ( شخص ) کے اور اس ( جنت ) کے درمیان صرف ایک ہاتھ یا ایک ہاتھ کے برابر فاصلہ رہ جاتا ہے کہ کتاب ( تقدیر ) اس پر سبقت کر جاتی ہے اور وہ جہنمیوں کے کام کر بیٹھتا ہے تو وہ داخل جہنم ہو جاتا ہے، اور تم میں سے کوئی شخص جہنمیوں کے کام کرتا ہے یہاں تک کہ اس ( شخص ) کے اور اس ( جہنم ) کے درمیان صرف ایک ہاتھ یا ایک ہاتھ کے برابر کا فاصلہ رہ جاتا ہے کہ کتاب ( تقدیر ) اس پر سبقت کر جاتی ہے، اب وہ جنتیوں کے کام کرنے لگتا ہے تو داخل جنت ہو جاتا ہے ۔
Abdullah bin Masud said: The Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم who spoke the truth and whose word was belief told us the following: The constituents of one of you are collected for forty days in his mother’s womb, then they become a piece of congealed blood for a similar period, then they become a lump of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends to him an angel with four words who records his provision the period of his life, his deeds, and whether he will be miserable or blessed ; thereafter he breathes the spirit into him. One of you will do the deeds of those who go to Paradise so that there will be only a cubit between him and it or will be within a cubit, then what is decreed will overcome him so that he will do the deeds of those who go to Hell and will enter it; and one of you will do the deeds of those who go to hell, so that there will be only a cubit between him and it or will be within a cubit, then what is decreed will overcome him, so that he will do the deeds of those who go to Paradise and will enter it.

Abdullah bin Ka;b bin Malik who used to lead his father from among his sons when he became blind, said: I heard Kaab bin Malik say: The transmitter Ibn al-sarh then narrated the story of his remaining behind from the prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم forbade the Muslims to speak to any of us three. When ( in this state) abundant time passed on me, I ascended the wall of the garden of Abu Qatadah who was my cousin. I saluted him, but, I swear by Allah, he did not return salute to me. He then narrated the story of the revelation of the Quranic verses relating to his repentance.
