حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُقَاتِلٍ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ : مَرَّ يَهُودِيٌّ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : وَعَلَيْكَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَتَدْرُونَ مَا يَقُولُ ؟ قَالَ : السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ ، قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَلَا نَقْتُلُهُ ؟ ، قَالَ : لَا ، إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ ، فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ .
ہم سے محمد بن مقاتل ابوالحسن مروزی نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم کو عبداللہ بن مبارک نے خبر دی، کہا ہم کو شعبہ بن حجاج نے، انہوں نے ہشام بن زید بن انس سے، وہ کہتے تھے میں نے اپنے دادا انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ سے سنا، وہ کہتے تھے کہ ایک یہودی نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس سے گزرا کہنے لگا «السام عليك.» یعنی تم مرو۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جواب میں صرف «وعليك .» کہا ( تو بھی مرے گا ) پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے صحابہ رضی اللہ عنہم سے فرمایا کہ تم کو معلوم ہوا، اس نے کیا کہا؟ اس نے «السام عليك.» کہا۔ صحابہ نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! ( حکم ہو تو ) اس کو مار ڈالیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا، نہیں۔ جب کتاب والے یہود اور نصاریٰ تم کو سلام کیا کریں تو تم بھی یہی کہا کرو «وعليكم» ۔
Narrated Anas bin Malik: A Jew passed by Allah's Apostle and said, As-Samu 'Alaika. Allah's Apostle said in reply, We 'Alaika. Allah's Apostle then said to his companions, Do you know what he (the Jew) has said? He said, 'As-Samu 'Alaika.' They said, O Allah's Apostle! Shall we kill him? The Prophet, said, No. When the people of the Book greet you, say: 'Wa 'Alaikum.'

Hadith 6918
Narrated `Abdullah: When the Verse: 'It is those who believe and confuse not their belief with wrong (i.e., worshipping others besides Allah): (6.82) was revealed, it became very hard on the companions of the Prophet and they said, Who among us has not confused his belief with wrong (oppression)? On that, Allah's Apostle said, This is not meant (by the Verse). Don't you listen to Luqman's statement: 'Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great wrong indeed.' (31.13)

Narrated `Ikrima: Some Zanadiqa (atheists) were brought to `Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn `Abbas who said, If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's Apostle forbade it, saying, 'Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire).' I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'
