Pakistan Railways is embarking on an extensive initiative to revamp its railway tracks, with the primary objective of improving locomotive speed to ensure punctuality and efficiency for passengers.

This ambitious infrastructure overhaul will encompass various critical elements, including the track and signaling system along the Karachi to Peshawar route, specifically Main Line-I (ML-I).

A significant project is currently underway, involving the doubling of tracks from Lahore to Peshawar, covering a substantial distance of 462.20 kilometers. With Pakistan Railways’ existing track length of 1,726 kilometers, the goal of this project is to enhance train speeds significantly, with an impressive target of 160 kilometers per hour. The ML-I upgrade project is a pivotal component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), showcasing the nation’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure.

In pursuit of faster and more punctual rail services, the Ministry of Railways has outlined a comprehensive plan. It involves the procurement of 230 passenger coaches and 820 Capacity Wagons under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) project. The acquisition of 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) passenger coaches has already been completed, and plans are in place for the domestic manufacturing of the remaining 184 coaches.

These passenger coaches are specially designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, aligning with Pakistan Railways’ commitment to providing efficient and high-speed travel options for passengers.

The initiative signifies the railway’s dedication to meeting the growing demand for improved transportation services and ensuring that passengers can enjoy punctual, comfortable, and faster journeys.

By investing in track infrastructure, signaling systems, and modern coaches, Pakistan Railways aims to not only enhance passenger experiences but also promote economic growth and connectivity within the country. The railway sector plays a vital role in the transportation of goods and people, and these infrastructure developments are poised to have a positive impact on trade, commerce, and the overall efficiency of the transportation network.
