Cost Of Power Generation Fell By 10.3% In February

The cost of power generation fell by 10.3 percent in February this fiscal year as?compared to the same month last fiscal, as the share of nuclear and hydropower in the overall electricity generation mix increased. 


Sources reported that power generation costs fell by 28.5 percent in the review month compared to the previous month of January this fiscal. 


Power generation, on the other hand, decreased by 4.1 percent in February this fiscal year compared to the same month last fiscal. 


According to the data, power generation fell by 4.1 percent year on year to 7,756 GWh (11,541MW) in February 2023, as?compared to 8,088 GWh (12,036MW) in February 2022. Electricity generation decreased by 8.9 percent month over month. 


Moreover, power generation fell by 7.1 percent year on year to 84,840 GWh (14,547MW) in the first eight months of the current fiscal year, compared to 91,281 GWh (15,652MW) in the same period last year. 


In February, hydropower generation increased by 39.2 percent, while nuclear generation increased by 85.8 percent. Power generation from RLNG increased by 19.3 percent, while solar generation increased by 41.1 percent. 


However, power generation from coal decreased by 57.4 percent in the review month, while generation from RFO fell by 79.5 percent. Wing’s share of the generation mix fell by 44 percent, while gas fell by 7 percent. 

The share of nuclear sources in electricity generation has more than doubled to over 24 percent, up from 12.5 percent in February of last year, and the share of hydel has also increased to 26.5 percent, up from 18.2 percent. 


In February of this fiscal year, the share of coal and RFO decreased. Fuel costs for power generation fell by 10.3 percent year on year and 28.5 percent month on month in February 2023, to an average of Rs 8.01/KWh, compared to Rs 8.94/KWh and Rs 11.20/KWh in February 2022 and January 2023, respectively.
