حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، ح وحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَاوَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمَكِّيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبَّادِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْمَخْزُومِيِّ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: قَامَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، مَا يُوجِبُ الْحَجَّ؟، قَالَ: الزَّادُ وَالرَّاحِلَةُ ، قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، فَمَا الْحَاجُّ؟، قَالَ: الشَّعِثُ التَّفِلُ ، وَقَامَ آخَرُ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ومَا الْحَجُّ؟، قَالَ: الْعَجُّ وَالثَّجُّ ، قَالَ وَكِيعٌ: يَعْنِي بِالْعَجِّ الْعَجِيجَ: بِالتَّلْبِيَةِ، وَالثَّجُّ: نَحْرُ الْبُدْنِ.
عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ ایک شخص نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس کھڑا ہوا، اور عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! کون سی چیز حج کو واجب کر دیتی ہے،؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جواب دیا: زاد سفر اور سواری ( کا انتظام ) اس نے پوچھا: اللہ کے رسول! حاجی کیسا ہوتا ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: پراگندہ سر اور خوشبو سے عاری ایک دوسرا شخص اٹھا، اور اس نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! حج کیا ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «عج» اور «ثج» ۔ وکیع کہتے ہیں کہ «عج» کا مطلب ہے لبیک پکارنا، اور «ثج» کا مطلب ہے خون بہانا یعنی قربانی کرنا۔
It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: “A man stood up and said to the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘O Messenger of Allah! What makes Hajj obligatory?’ He said: ‘Provision and a mount.’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the (real) Hajj?’ He said: ‘The one with dishevelled hair and no perfume.’ Another (man) stood up and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the (real) Hajj?’ He said: ‘Raising one’s voice and slaughtering the sacrificial animal.’”

They asked: ‘Is it every year?’ He said: ‘No. If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory.’ Then the following was revealed: “O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.’” [5:101]
