أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا يَسْتَغْفِرُ لِأَبَوَيْهِ وَهُمَا مُشْرِكَانِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ أَتَسْتَغْفِرُ لَهُمَا وَهُمَا مُشْرِكَانِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَوَ لَمْ يَسْتَغْفِرْ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،‏‏‏‏ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَنَزَلَتْ وَمَا كَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لأَبِيهِ إِلا عَنْ مَوْعِدَةٍ وَعَدَهَا إِيَّاهُ سورة التوبة آية 114.

علی رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں   میں نے ایک شخص کو اپنے ماں باپ کے لیے مغفرت طلب کرتے ہوئے سنا حالانکہ وہ دونوں مشرک تھے، تو میں نے کہا: کیا تو ان دونوں کے لیے مغفرت طلب کرتا ہے؟ حالانکہ وہ دونوں مشرک تھے، تو اس نے کہا: کیا ابراہیم ( علیہ السلام ) نے اپنے باپ کے لیے مغفرت طلب نہیں کی تھی؟ تو میں نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آیا، اور آپ سے اس بات کا تذکرہ کیا، تو ( یہ آیت ) اتری: «وما كان استغفار إبراهيم لأبيه إلا عن موعدة وعدها إياه» ”ابراہیم کا اپنے باپ کے لیے مغفرت طلب کرنا ایک وعدہ کی وجہ سے تھا“ ( التوبہ: ۱۱۴ ) ۔

It was narrated that 'Ali said: I heard a man praying for forgiveness for his parents who were idolaters, and I said: 'Are you praying for forgiveness for them even though they are idolators? He said: 'Didn't Ibrahim pray for forgiveness for his father?' I went to the Prophet and told him about that, then the following revealed: And Ibrahim's (Abraham) invoking (of Allah) for his father's forgiveness was only because of a promise he (Ibrahim) had made to him (his father). (Daif)

Whoever insists on praying for it let him say: Allahumma ahini ma kanatil-hayatu khairanli wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khairanli (O Allah, keep me alive so long as life is good for me, and cause me to die when death is good for me.)
