Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Voluntary Prayers

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کے غلام کریب کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے ابن عباس سے پوچھا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی رات کی نماز ( تہجد ) کیسے ہوتی تھی؟ تو انہوں نے کہا: ایک رات میں آپ کے پاس رہا، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ام المؤمنین میمونہ کے پاس تھے، آپ سو گئے، جب ایک تہائی یا آدھی رات گزر گئی تو بیدار ہوئے اور اٹھ کر مشکیزے کے پاس گئے، جس میں پانی رکھا تھا، وضو فرمایا، میں نے بھی آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ وضو کیا، پھر آپ کھڑے ہوئے اور میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے بائیں پہلو میں کھڑا ہو گیا تو آپ نے مجھے اپنے دائیں جانب کر لیا، پھر اپنا ہاتھ میرے سر پر رکھا جیسے آپ میرے کان مل رہے ہوں گویا مجھے بیدار کرنا چاہتے ہوں، پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہلکی سی دو رکعتیں پڑھیں ان میں سے ہر رکعت میں آپ نے سورۃ فاتحہ پڑھی، پھر سلام پھیر دیا، پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے نماز پڑھی یہاں تک کہ مع وتر گیارہ رکعتیں ادا کیں، پھر سو گئے، اس کے بعد بلال رضی اللہ عنہ آئے اور کہنے لگے: اللہ کے رسول! نماز، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کھڑے ہوئے اور دو رکعتیں پڑھیں پھر آپ نے لوگوں کو نماز پڑھائی۔

The client of Ibn Abbas said that he asked him: How would the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم pray during the night ? He replied: I spent a night with him when he was with Maimunah. He slept and awoke when half the night or one-third of it had passed. He stood up and went to a leather bad containing water. He performed ablution and I also performed ablution with him. He then stood up and I also stood at his left side. He made me stand at his right side. He then put his hand upon my head, as he was touching my ear and awakening me. He then prayed two light rak'ahs and recited Surah al-Fatihah in each of them, and uttered the salutation. He then prayed eleven rak'ahs observing the witr and slept. Then Bilal came to him and said: Prayer, Messenger of Allah. He got up and prayed two rak'ahs, and then led the people in the prayer.
