ثُمَّ قَامَ فِي النَّاسِ فَقَالَ : أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ لَا تَمَنَّوْا لِقَاءَ الْعَدُوِّ وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ الْعَافِيَةَ ، فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَاصْبِرُوا ، وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ الْجَنَّةَ تَحْتَ ظِلَالِ السُّيُوفِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ مُنْزِلَ الْكِتَابِ وَمُجْرِيَ السَّحَابِ وَهَازِمَ الْأَحْزَابِ اهْزِمْهُمْ ، وَانْصُرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ . وَقَالَ مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمٌ أَبُو النَّضْرِ كُنْت كَاتِبًا لِعُمَرَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ فَأَتَاهُ كِتَابُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : لَا تَمَنَّوْا لِقَاءَ الْعَدُوِّ .
تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے لوگوں کو خطاب کرتے ہوئے فرمایا ”اے لوگو! دشمن سے لڑائی بھڑائی کی تمنا نہ کرو ‘ بلکہ اللہ سے سلامتی مانگو۔ ہاں! جب جنگ چھڑ جائے تو پھر صبر کئے رہو اور ڈٹ کر مقابلہ کرو اور جان لو کہ جنت تلواروں کے سائے میں ہے۔“ پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے یوں دعا کی «اللهم منزل الكتاب ومجري السحاب وهازم الأحزاب اهزمهم وانصرنا عليهم» ”اے اللہ! کتاب ( قرآن ) کے نازل فرمانے والے ‘ اے بادلوں کے چلانے والے! اے احزاب ( یعنی کافروں کی جماعتوں کو غزوہ خندق کے موقع پر ) شکست دینے والے! ہمارے دشمن کو شکست دے اور ان کے مقابلے میں ہماری مدد کر۔“ اور موسیٰ بن عقبہ نے کہا کہ مجھ سے سالم ابوالنضر نے بیان کیا کہ میں عمر بن عبیداللہ کا منشی تھا۔ ان کے پاس عبداللہ بن ابی اوفی رضی اللہ عنہما کا خط آیا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا تھا ”دشمن سے لڑائی لڑنے کی تمنا نہ کرو۔“
And then he got up amongst the people saying, O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety, but when you face the enemy, be patient, and remember that Paradise is under the shades of swords. Then he said, O Allah, the Revealer of the Holy Book, and the Mover of the clouds and the Defeater of the clans, defeat them, and grant us victory over them.

Hadith 2782
Narrated `Abdullah bin Masud: I asked Allah's Apostle, O Allah's Apostle! What is the best deed? He replied, To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times. I asked, What is next in goodness? He replied, To be good and dutiful to your parents. I further asked, what is next in goodness? He replied, To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause. I did not ask Allah's Apostle anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.

Narrated `Aisha: (That she said), O Allah's Apostle! We consider Jihad as the best deed. Should we not fight in Allah's Cause? He said, The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj-Mabrur (i.e. Hajj which is done according to the Prophet's tradition and is accepted by Allah).

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward). He replied, I do not find such a deed. Then he added, Can you, while the Muslim fighter is in the battle-field, enter your mosque to perform prayers without cease and fast and never break your fast? The man said, But who can do that? Abu- Huraira added, The Mujahid (i.e. Muslim fighter) is rewarded even for the footsteps of his horse while it wanders bout (for grazing) tied in a long rope.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Somebody asked, O Allah's Apostle! Who is the best among the people? Allah's Apostle replied A believer who strives his utmost in Allah's Cause with his life and property. They asked, Who is next? He replied, A believer who stays in one of the mountain paths worshipping Allah and leaving the people secure from his mischief.
