Norwegian Hydro Company (NOR Hydro) and the Gilgit-Baltistan government have embarked on a groundbreaking partnership to advance sustainable energy production in the region. A historic investment agreement was signed at a ceremony held in Islamabad, marking a pivotal moment in Gilgit-Baltistan’s energy landscape.

As part of this landmark accord, NOR Hydro will invest in hydro and solar energy projects, commencing with Skardu in Baltistan. NOR Hydro’s investment focus encompasses enhancing the production capacity of existing power facilities, establishing a 4.5-megawatt solar park for eco-friendly electricity generation, and collaborating on water and power projects utilizing advanced hydroelectric technology.

The signing ceremony, graced by the presence of Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan of Gilgit-Baltistan and Norwegian Ambassador Per Albert Ilsaas, was characterized by expressions of gratitude and mutual recognition.

The Chief Minister lauded Norway’s role in the region’s future progress, while the Norwegian Ambassador commended Gilgit-Baltistan’s growth and expressed confidence in the potential of the private sector in the region.

This collaborative endeavor is poised to significantly bolster the region’s energy production, promoting a greener environment through solar energy utilization and the application of efficient hydroelectric technology.

In alignment with global environmental objectives, these projects underscore a commitment to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, reinforcing the pursuit of a cleaner, eco-conscious future.

Norway’s influence on Gilgit-Baltistan’s energy landscape has deep historical roots. This partnership harks back to the establishment of the Gilgit-Baltistan Hydro Electric Workshop in 1992, operated by the Norwegian government until 1998.

During this period, vital services such as turbine refurbishment and power station troubleshooting were provided. The technical expertise gained during these years has played a pivotal role in managing 127 hydropower stations across the region, boasting a collective capacity of 200 MW.

Norway’s contribution to the region’s energy infrastructure has been substantial, marked by the establishment of key hydropower stations, including the Kargah Ph-V station in Gilgit (1994), the Hassan Abad station in Hunza (1994), and the Shekho Tangir station (1996).
