First-Ever Robotic Surgery Performed At Pakistan Kidney And Liver Institute

Pakistan Kidney and Liver Transplant Institute (PKLI) has successfully executed the first robotic surgery in a public sector hospital. 


According to the sources, Dr Nadeem Bin Nusrat who is the?Chairman of the Urology Department, and the entire team were responsible for this historic achievement. 


The surgery was a drastic nephrectomy (kidney removal), and the patient was able to go home just a few hours later. 


Professor Dr Muhammad Rehan Mohsin, Professor of Urology and leading Robotic Surgeon at SIUT Karachi, and Dr Riaz Hussain Laghari, Associate Professor of Urology at SIUT Karachi, led the project, with help from the PKLI team and CMR Surgical teams from Dubai, Karachi, and Lahore. 


Meanwhile, Prof Saeed Akhter, Chairman of the PKLI Board of Governors, praised the medical staff. 

SIUT hosted the country’s first 2-day international robotic surgery conference in Karachi last year, which also marked the achievement of over 1200 successful robotic treatments. SIUT’s robotic unit was officially launched last year. Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah dedicated it in February 2022. 


The symposium was attended by prominent robotic surgeons from the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as other Pakistani specialists. 


While addressing the symposium session, Prof Adib Rizvi, director of?SIUT, said that robotic surgery was another step forward for the SIUT team’s dedicated professionals who not only successfully performed this state-of-the-art surgical procedure but are now eager to train fellow professionals across the country and region. 


He reaffirmed SIUT’s commitment to staying current with technology and making it available to those who require it. He stated that this facility is part of SIUT’s mission of providing health coverage at no cost and without prejudice. 


Following the introductory session, a panel of international and national specialists expounded on the advancement of robotic surgery and procedures in their different nations.
