The 45-kilometer-long road that connects the districts of Hafizabad and Wazirabad with Gujrat is scheduled to begin building in the upcoming months.

The road construction will be an important piece of the Gujrat division’s infrastructure. According to the government’s tender, PKR 8.2 billion will be spent on the project, which is about to get underway from the University of Hafizabad campus, which is still under construction, up to Khanki headworks, which touches the border of the Gujrat district. From there, a 19-kilometer road is already being constructed up to Machiana village, the proposed location for the Gujrat divisional complex.

Additionally, the divisional headquarters will be more easily accessible from the Hafizabad district and the recently constructed Alipur Chattha tehsil of the Wazirabad district thanks to the carpeting and 44-foot widening of the existing narrow road along the Lower Chenab Canal (LCC) bank.

Notably, the Punjab government has approved the partition of Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, and Hafiz Abad into a distinct 10th division.

According to news reports, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Parvez Elahi laid the cornerstones for three massive road infrastructure projects in Gujrat last month. These projects are expected to cost PKR 13 billion to develop.

Further details revealed that these projects comprise two major flyovers that run from the Chenab River’s side to the entrance to Gujrat city and a 29-kilometer highway that would connect the Kharian-Sambrial Motorway with Gujrat city. The expressway is expected to cost PKR 9.11 billion while developing both flyovers would cost PKR 4 billion.

Mujahid Sher Dil, the secretary of communication and works, gave the CM a briefing regarding the key aspects of the project during the laying of the foundation stone. The fact that both flyovers were previously approved by the federal government as a component of the Samman-Dinga road project two years ago was emphasized.
