Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s free solar system initiative has received an overwhelming response, with more than 1.6 million people applying for the program, far exceeding the available 130,000 slots. The unprecedented interest reflects the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions, particularly among low-income households highly grappling with increased electricity costs and frequent power outages.
A Ray of Hope for Low-Income Families
The KP Energy Department is currently leading this project for delivering free solar power systems to eligible households in two phases. It’s estimated that 65,000 beneficiaries will be selected in each phase, making solar energy accessible to those who need it the most. The program is making a priority to those masses who are already enrolled in the Benazir Income Support Program to ensure that the required things are received to the truly deserving people.
The government is providing subsidy of 50 percent on the solar systems to those houses which consumes electricity of 100 units or less than this. These systems, which have an estimated total cost of approximately Rs200,000 each, will significantly minimize dependence on the national power grid, helping families cut down on their electricity bills while ensuring an uninterrupted energy supply.

Verification and Implementation Process
With applications pouring in, the provincial authorities now face the challenge of verifying and shortlisting eligible recipients. Once the registration period closes, the verification process will begin, ensuring that only qualified households receive the solar systems. Officials emphasize that transparency and fairness will be key to the selection process, as the initiative is designed to uplift underprivileged families and promote sustainable energy use.
Way forward approach towards a Greener Future
The huge response to the imitative reflects the urgent requirement for renewable energy solutions in Pakistan. With increasing power shortages and rising electricity costs, solar energy presents a viable alternative for households those struggling with unreliable electricity supply.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government took this initiative for 2 purposes: 1st is to for providing relief to low-income families and 2nd one is to promote cleaner, greener, and more energy-secure future. If it successfully executes then it will prove to be the exemplary model for other provinces to adopt leading the country towards sustainable energy solutions.
