Pakistan’s first female Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ayesha Malik, has been named to the BBC’s list of 100 inspiring and influential women worldwide for 2022.

According to sources, Justice Ayesha Malik, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court in a male-dominated society, was the only Pakistani woman on the 10th season of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s 100 inspiring women list.

The BBC acknowledged Malik’s decisions protecting women’s rights on its website, particularly her landmark decision against two-finger virginity tests.

It was also stated that Justice Ayesha conducts training for judges worldwide and has inaugurated conferences for women judges in South Asian countries, encouraging debate about including a gender perspective in the justice system.

“Women must build a new narrative that includes their perspective, shares their experience, and includes their stories,” said the top court judge.

The BBC announced its list of the 100 most inspiring and influential women in the world for 2022, with women demanding change in Iran and the female faces of resistance in Ukraine and Russia dominating this year’s list.

The list includes Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska, American singer Billie Eilish, India’s Priyanka Chopra and Selma Blair, Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi, Ghanaian author Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, and others.

It is to mention that Ayesha Malik’s appointment was approved by President Arif Alvi this year. In addition, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification stating:

?“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 177 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is pleased to appoint Mrs. Justice Ayesha A. Malik, Judge Lahore High Court, Lahore as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan with effect from the date she makes an oath of her office”.

The news comes a day after the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment approved Justice Ayesha Malik’s nomination and recommended her name to the president for the position.
