The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has begun preparing to introduce a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Islamabad to meet the city’s expanding transportation needs.

The CDA’s planning wing has approached the Economic Affairs Division in order to obtain funds from an international donor, such as the Asian Development Bank or the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to carry out this project.

Moreover, the Planning Wing has created a preliminary concept paper in this regard in order to move forward with this project; however, top officers have indicated that a proper consultant must be hired to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study.

According to?the initial study, four possible routes have been identified😕

•???????a 30.5km long road from Rawat to Faisal Mosque through Islamabad Motorway and Faisal Avenue

•???????A 13.7-kilometre-long path from the N5, also known as the G.T road, to the Pakistan Monument through the Srinagar Highway.

•???????27.5km long path from Rawat at T-Chowk to 26 No Stop on G.T road

•???????10.4km long route from Pirwadhai to Faizabad through the IJP road.

The city planners considered using the existing railway track in Islamabad but abandoned the concept since it was insufficient for the implementation of this project because the present railway track is one-sided and carries the majority of Pakistan Railways traffic.
