How many people are permanent residents of Karachi is still the main question that creates conflicting issues among the political players of the city, especially PPP, MQM and JI could never reach an agreeable point in this regard.

The ongoing population census shows that the population of Karachi has come down. So far, about 90 percent of the counting of the people of the city has been done, and only 10 percent of people are still to be counted.

About 2.64 million households have been counted so far, and according to the results of this 90 percent completed census, the city’s population comes to 13,471,136. This figure shows that the population of Karachi has decreased by 15.94 percent as the number was 16,024,894 after about 90 percent counting in the 2017 census.

The final count in the 2017 censtoodtood at 16.05 million. The results of 90 percent counting indicate that even after doing the 10 percent remaining counting, the results would again create the conflicts among the main political parties of the city.

Surprisingly, the census of all seven Karachi districts shows no increase in the population. The biggest district is Karachi East; the census of which shows that the district’s population has come down by 25 percent.

In the South?district, the population has decreased by 19.70 percent. In Korangi district, the population reduced by more than one percent, the population of Keamari district has come down by 10 percent, the population of Central district decreased by 11.84 percent, the population of District West came down by 9.68 percent and the population of Malir district decreased by 6.61 percent as per data, available after the 90 percent completion of the ongoing census as compared to the census of 2017.
