Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Pakistan’s majestic region, which is located in the Karakoram Mountains, has got a name in CNN Travel’s Top 25 Destinations to Visit in 2025. GB is recognized in Pakistan and worldwide due to its enticing beauty, towering peaks, and adventurous spirit. The region attracts thousands of tourists and climbers each year who come for expeditions, paragliding, and the unparalleled thrill of the mountains.
In the list published on Wednesday, CNN Travel praised GB’s breathtaking landscape, stating: “The Gilgit-Baltistan region in the Karakoram Mountains isn’t the easiest place to get to — flight schedules can be unreliable, and roads can be blocked seasonally — but it has more tantalizing peaks than a lemon meringue pie.”
The broadcast has also pinpointed the enticing appeal of the regions especially for the mountaineers, massively showing five of the 14 eight-thousanders — the world’s highest peaks. K2 is secured the title of the second-tallest mountain globally and is massively renowned for its immense dangers and it is suitable or aligns better with the most courageous souls. CNN compared hiking in GB to making the Himalayas look like a walk in Central Park, emphasizing that travel here demands preparation and teamwork.
Adventure Tourism Booming in Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan has become a hotspot for adventure tourism, with over 1,700 foreign climbers applying for permits in 2024. Of these, 175 climbers set their sights on conquering K2 during the summer season, according to GB Tourism Department Deputy Secretary Sajid Hussain.

Other notable achievements include the successful summiting of Nanga Parbat (8,125 meters) on July 9, where two Pakistani climbers, Dilawar Hussain and Fida Ali, joined their Nepali teammates, Lhakpa Temba Sherpa and Pemba Sherpa, in reaching the peak. Similarly, 11 climbers, including a three-member Pakistani team, overcame challenging weather conditions to summit Gasherbrum-II on July 23.
Although the expedition encountered various kinds of setbacks—such as injuries and illnesses that forced some climbers to retreat—these accomplishments highlight the growing presence and determination of Pakistani mountaineers in the global climbing community.

The government has announced plans to establish a world-class mountaineering school in Gilgit-Baltistan, as revealed by the Shahbaz’s aide on climate change, Romina Khurshid Alam, on July 22. The school is likely to prioritize:

- Equipping aspiring mountaineers with essential skills
- Fostering respect for the local environment and cultures
“This initiative is not taken just for promoting sustainable climbing but also create employment opportunities for the local community,” Alam said, adding that the school would support safe exploration while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
