In a significant move towards sustainable energy and poverty alleviation, the Sindh government has launched the distribution of solar home systems (SHS) to 200,000 low-income households across the province. This initiative is part of the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP) and aims to provide affordable and renewable energy solutions to underserved communities.

Announcing the initiative at an event near KPT Interchange, DHA Phase-I, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah highlighted the government’s commitment to improving energy access. He also revealed that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has directed the purchase of an additional 300,000 solar units to extend the benefits to more families.

Affordable Solar Solutions for a Better Life

The solar home systems come heavily subsidized, making them accessible to those in need.

Each system aims to provide essential electricity for daily use which includes the following things:

  • 80W solar panel
  • Smart power management unit
  • Long-lasting battery
  • LED bulbs
  • Mobile charging facilities
  • Pedestal fan

“This initiative will not only help families reduce electricity costs but also improve their quality of life, enhance business opportunities, and ensure better education for children,” said the Chief Minister.

Overcoming Challenges in Renewable Energy

Murad Ali Shah seemed to be acknowledging the problems encountered in Sindh’s renewable energy sector, particularly in developing the Thar Coal Project.

Despite financial constraints and resistance from the federal government, the Sindh government has reflected a commitment to promoting the best renewable energy solutions.

He recalled that in 2014, Sindh took the initiative to solarize 600 schools in Nagar Parkar and launch two solar power projects in Sukkur. However, federal authorities blocked ratifications for additional power generation projects, hindering progress.

“Despite opposition, we continued our struggle for energy self-sufficiency,” he added.

Thar Coal and Future Renewable Projects

The Thar Coal Project, which now generates the cheapest electricity in Pakistan, was also discussed. The CM credited former President Asif Ali Zardari for securing federal cooperation and ensuring its completion.

Looking forward, Sindh is working with the federal government to establish a railway line dedicated to transporting Thar coal, enhancing energy independence. Additionally, partnerships with Chinese companies are underway to develop wind-solar hybrid projects, including 350MW and 75MW energy schemes finalized during Zardari’s recent visit to China.

Commitment to Clean Energy and Social Welfare

As part of the PPP manifesto, the Sindh government is also committed to providing 300 free electricity units per month to low-income families. The distribution of 200,000 SHS kits is expected to be completed by July 2025, with a target of 400 kits per district per week.

Sindh Energy Minister Nasser Shah has given guarantee that SHS kits are being distributed equally across all 30 districts in collaboration with NGOs like HANDS, SRSO, and SEFCO. Beneficiaries are selected using Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) data, ensuring that those deserving the financial support receive assistance.

Expressing optimism, the CM had praised for the Sindh Energy Department and its team for their dedication. He reaffirmed Sindh’s leadership in the conversion to renewable energy with support from the World Bank and other international development partners.

CM summarized that The Sindh Solar Energy Project is a highly commendable project towards a greener, more equitable future.
