The government of Quetta launched its first-ever inter-city bus service on Monday with a fleet of eight eco-friendly buses as part of the Green Bus Service. Operated through a public-private partnership (PPP), the service aims to provide modern travel facilities to the people of Quetta.

The inauguration ceremony took place in the Takatu area near Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) and was officiated by a common man invited to cut the ribbon by Chief Minister Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo. The event was attended by CM’s Adviser on Transport Malik Naeem Bazai, Chief Secretary Abdul Aziz Uqaili, and other officials.

Chief Secretary Uqaili announced that the government has initially procured eight buses for the service, and the number will be increased to 20 to cover more routes in the provincial capital. The buses will initially operate between BUITEMS and Balochistan University, covering a distance of 18.7km with 18 stops.

The government has plans to expand the service to other towns and cities of Balochistan in the future. The air-conditioned buses will have designated seats for disabled persons and women, with a capacity of 30 passengers each. The one-way fare has been set at Rs30, which is lower than the Rs50 charged by private transporters.

CM’s Adviser Mr. Bazai mentioned that private transporters, who previously operated dilapidated buses on different routes, are opposing the new service. The government is in negotiations with them to address their reservations, and plans to replace their old buses with new ones.
