Year on year (YoY), power generation in the country fell by 16% to 12,284 gigawatts?per hour (GWh) in May 2023.
Solar generation is up 38% year on year, while power generation fuel costs are down 26.1 percent year on year to Rs. 9.72/KWh in May 2023, compared to Rs. 13.15/KWh last year.
According to Arif Habib Limited (AHL), power generation fell 10.4 percent year on year to 115,876 GWh in the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2022-23, compared with 129,317 GWh in the same period last year. Hydel (27 percent), RLNG (24.3 percent), coal (16.8 percent), and nuclear (12.6 percent) were the top contributors in May 2023.
From 3,591 GWh in May 2022 to 3,312 GWh in May 2023, hydel power generation is down 7.8 percent year on year. Hydel generation is up 76.9 percent month on month (MoM). It is down 0.5 percent year on year for the period 11MFY23.
Similarly, RLNG-based electricity generation declined by 10.9 percent year on year to 2,988 GWh in May 2023 from 3,355 GWh the previous year, but increased by 23.6 percent from 2,418 GWh in April. Coal-fired electricity generation climbed by 2.1 percent year on year to 2,061 GWh in May 2023, up from 2,018 GWh the previous year.
On a month-to-month basis, coal-fired electricity generation increased by 13.4 percent in May, from 1,819 GWh in April.
In addition, nuclear power generation fell by 18.4 percent year on year to 1,543 GWh in May, from 1,890 GWh the previous year, whereas monthly nuclear power generation dropped by 19.5 percent from 1,916 GWh the previous month.
As of May, solar-based production had increased by 38% year on year, from 90 GWh to 124 GWh. It increased by 38.5 percent year on year to 968 GWh in 11MFY23, from 699 GWh in 11MFY22.
