The government has announced to increase in the supply of electricity to K-Electric by 950MW from the national grid from June 2024, according to media sources.

At present, the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) is providing 1100MW of electricity to K-Electric from the national grid till June 2024, which will be further increased to 2050MW from June 2024, as said by Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan 2022-31(IGCEP) submitted by NTDC to National Electric Power Regulatory Authority.

Sources said that the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between KE and NTDC has already expired, and now, NTDC is providing electricity to KE without any agreement, however, both sides are optimistic to reach an agreement in this regard shortly.

KE currently relies for its one-third of power supply on the national grid. The total present installed generation capacity of the KE system is 3,319 MW, out of which 97 percent is thermal projects including local coal, local gas, imported coal, RFO, and RLNG-based technologies, and 3 percent RE including solar PV.

During the fiscal year, 2021-22 the energy produced by the K-Electric system power generation fleet was 10,861 GWh which was contributed mainly 96 percent by thermal projects on local gas, HSD, imported coal, RFO, and RLNG-based technologies, 2 percent by solar PV, 1% by nuclear projects, and 1 percent by wind-based technology.

The plan further added that 682MW of the present capacity of KE will retire within the next decade.

Sources reported that KE produces electricity from its own generation units having an installed capacity of 1875 MW, besides, it also has arrangements with external power producers for around 1680 MW which include 1100 MW from the National Grid.?

In addition, 52MW and 104 MW has been added to the Fleet through the commissioning of FPCL Coal Plant and Sindh Nooriabad Power Company Gas Plant IPP respectively. 50 MW of solar power generation was added through Oursun Solar and Gharo Solar each while 14MW was added through Lotte RLNG-based Captive Power Plant.
