Several motorcycle users have expressed their apprehensions about the ongoing construction of the dedicated bikers’ lane on Ferozepur Road as several cuts in the lane can cause serious accidents.

The construction of the lane has been started on the special directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who wants to provide safe travel to motorcycle users.

In a progressive move toward safer and more efficient urban transportation, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has launched a “pilot project” to create dedicated lanes for cyclists and motorcyclists on Ferozepur Road Lahore. Maryum Nawaz has given the instructions to carry out this initiative, which marks the first of its kind in the city and is set to serve as a model for similar projects on other major thoroughfares.

The pilot project is designed to cover a 4 km stretch of Ferozepur Road, extending from Kalma Chowk to the Lahore Bridge (Qainchi). Expert engineers specifically designed these lanes by considering the commuters’ safety. The lanes are 2 feet wide and run along the outer edges of the road.

To separate them from the main traffic lanes, curb stones have been installed, and the lanes are painted with blue paint which is eco-friendly for clear visibility. The main agenda of this initiative is to guarantee smoother traffic flow while significantly mitigating the high rates of accidents involving cyclists and motorcyclists.

LDA Director General Tahir Farooq recently visited the site to inspect the ongoing work and received a comprehensive briefing from LDA Chief Engineer Israr Saeed and Project Director Haroon Saifi. Mr. Saeed discussed about the importance of these lanes, emphasizing that they would provide a safer and more convenient commuting option for citizens while promoting environmentally friendly urban transportation.

If the pilot project proves successful, the LDA plans to expand the initiative to other major roads in Lahore, such as Jail Road, The Mall, Multan Road, Wahdat Road, and Canal Road. The government’s commitment is reflecting through this winsome project to addressing the challenges of mixed traffic on Lahore’s busiest roads and improving overall urban mobility.

The safety of motorcyclists and cyclists must be prioritized. By adopting eco-friendly practices, the LDA aims to set a criterion for sustainable transportation way forward approaches in urban Pakistan. For the residents of Lahore, this initiative is not just a step forward in reducing traffic congestion but a stride toward a greener, safer future.
