The federal government’s decision to open a new border crossing at Kohak Cheedgi in Panjgur district, along the Pakistan-Iran border, marks a transformative step toward enhancing trade and fostering stronger bilateral ties. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Iran, aims to promote legal trade, curb smuggling, and provide employment opportunities for the residents of both nations. For the masses of Balochistan, particularly those in Panjgur, the move carries immense significance as it promises economic revitalization and new business prospects.

This border crossing is the fourth official trade route between Pakistan and Iran, highlighting the growing focus on legal and structured trade. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken swift action, directing the Gwadar Collectorate to ensure infrastructure development at Kohak Cheedgi and coordinate with relevant stakeholders. These efforts underscore the government’s commitment to expediting the process, with the FBR requiring regular progress reports to monitor developments.

The business community of Balochistan, long advocating for this crossing, has warmly welcomed the announcement. Leaders of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI), including President Mohammad Ayub and Senior Vice President Haji Akhtar Kakar, have shown massive applause for the move as a long-standing demand finally met. They believe the new trade route will not only facilitate legal import and export activities but also discourage smuggling, which has been a persistent issue in the region.

In addition to trade, the crossing is expected to generate significant employment opportunities for the local population, offering a lifeline to communities often marginalized by economic disparities. By providing an official platform for trade, the government is ensuring a fairer distribution of economic benefits while fostering trust and cooperation between Pakistan and Iran.

This development follows the December inauguration of the Gabd-Rimdan border crossing, another milestone aimed at improving connectivity and people-to-people exchanges. Located near the strategic ports of Chabahar in Iran and Gwadar in Pakistan, Gabd-Rimdan demonstrates the shared commitment of both countries to enhancing regional trade and connectivity.

Through initiatives like Kohak Cheedgi and Gabd-Rimdan, the government is not only addressing immediate economic needs but also laying the foundation for long-term regional prosperity. By humanizing trade policies and prioritizing local empowerment, such steps promise a brighter future for the people of Balochistan and beyond.
