Over 12,000 Pakistanis Languishing In Foreign Jails

According to the report, released in April 2019 by Justice Project Pakistan which is a non-government organization, working for Pakistani prisoners at home and in different countries, there were about 11,000 Pakistanis languishing in the jails of different countries.  

The report said, “Weak regulation of labour in Pakistan leaves thousands of mostly low-wage Pakistani male workers vulnerable to human trafficking, forced labour, ill-treatment in detention overseas and even the risk of death.” 


According to a recent report, submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the National Assembly Secretariat in response to a question by Pakistan People Party MNA Sikardar Ali Ranhoupoto, there are more than 12,000 Pakistanis, suffering in the jails of 67 countries of the world.  


The report of the ministry does not carry the details about the nature of the crimes, committed by of these jail prisoners. The report says that out of 12,080 Pakistani prisoners, 3,100 are in Saudi Arabia and the same number of Prisoners are in United Arab Emirates. Out of 811 Pakistanis, imprisoned in the jails of Greece, 200 have died. 


The report, presented in National Assembly Secretariat shows that there are 683 Pakistani prisoners in India, 672 in Iraq, 586 in Italy, 540 in Oman and 275 in the UK.


According to another report which was presented to Senate by the ministry in 2013, there were around 8,000 Pakistani in different jails of the world. This indicates the increasing of Pakistanis, involved in criminal activities abroad. 


Over the situation, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Foreign Minister of Pakistan replied, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is fully cognizant of its responsibilities towards overseas Pakistanis, especially those who are imprisoned in foreign jails.
