Wheat Production Estimated To Fall Short By 2 Million Tonnes

The production of wheat during the ongoing Rabi season has been estimated to be 26.81 million tonnes 

It was said in the press release headed by the Secretary of the National Food and Security and Research on Tuesday that the estimated production is 1.6 percent higher than the production of wheat last year. However, the target of wheat production for this year was 28.4 million tonnes. 


The area of wheat cultivation decreased from 9.3 million hectares to 9.1 million hectares. The estimated production has came down due to the effects of floods which delayed wheat sowing in Sind. Not only the wheat production but the sowing of tomatoes and onion also have the bad effects in Sind and Baluchistan.  


Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) has targeted the production of major crops during the Kharif season 2023-24, anticipating better availability of irrigation water and expressed satisfaction over the performance of crops during the outgoing Rabi season. 


FCA decided to set the production target of rice at 9 million tonnes over 3.1 million hectares of land, the production of sugar was set at 78.6 million tonnes over 1.2 hectares of land, the production of maize was set at 7.6 million tonnes over 1.2 million hectares of land.  


The production targets of other crops such as moong, mash and chilies were also set in the meeting. During the session, it was observed that the production of potato is expected to be 7.9 million tonnes from 300,000 hectares of land, showing an increase of 1.9 percent as compared the production of last year.
