According to Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s population would likely surpass 330 million by the year 2050. She emphasised the importance of slowing the growth rate.
When speaking at a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Population Council, she said that a national emergency plan would soon be presented to meet the expanding population. She stated that next week’s meeting of the national action task group has been called by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and would also include representation from the provinces.
The federal minister made projections for population increase, noting that there will be 260.3 million people in the country in 2030 and 330.8 million in 2050. She said Pakistan’s population surpassed 230 million as the world’s population reached 8 billion during the current year. “Pakistan’s population increased from 30 million to 230 million in 75 years.”
According to Aurangzeb, Pakistan is the fifth-largest country in the world by population. She added that Pakistan’s population is expanding at a rate of 2% per year and that the government must address the issues brought on by this growth. She asserted that the problem requires a national narrative.
“If we want a national narrative, all stakeholders must be consulted. The issue should be discussed openly on government platforms. Increasing population is as alarming as destruction caused by climate change,” she added.
The Media reports that UNFPA officials stated last week that Pakistan is one of the eight nations where more than half of the rise in the world’s population between now and 2050 would be focused.
According to the government, Pakistan is home to about 3% of the world’s population, which is growing at an average yearly pace of approximately 2%.
The UN warned that further misery will be in store for places already experiencing resource constraints due to climate change when the world population swelled above 8 billion people earlier this month. UN estimates there will be less of everything to go around by the 2080s as the world’s population is expected to grow by another 2.4 billion. This includes food, water, batteries, and gasoline.
