The suspension of US foreign aid has begun affecting Pakistan, with over 60 health facilities set to shut down, depriving 1.7 million people of life-saving reproductive health services.
These facilities were run by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which has now halted its US-funded operations following the aid freeze. UNFPA estimates it will need over $308 million in 2025 to sustain critical services in the region.
US officials have given surety that all aid programs for Pakistan have been temporarily suspended, resulting in the abrupt halting of several critical development projects. This decision follows a directive from the US Department of State, which instructed all diplomatic and consular missions to pause foreign aid programs for 90 days while a comprehensive reassessment takes place. Pakistan is among several countries affected by this policy, including Ukraine, Taiwan, and Jordan.
The suspension of aid has significantly disrupted development efforts across multiple sectors in Pakistan. Notably, the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation projects has been put on hold, leading to concerns about the preservation of cultural and historical sites. Furthermore, five vital energy sector projects have been forced to stop operations, creating uncertainty for ongoing efforts to improve Pakistan’s energy infrastructure.

Additionally, four programs are strongly intended to be focusing on economic growth have been affected, halting initiatives designed to boost Pakistan’s economic resilience and development. Likewise, five agricultural development projects aimed at making improvements in food security and promoting agricultural productivity. This is highly proved to be troublesome for Pakistan, where the agricultural sector forms the backbone of the economy and supports a large number of the population.
The impact extends to democracy, human rights, and governance-related programs, which have also been temporarily suspended. This includes 11 governance-related projects that were designed to strengthen public institutions and improve accountability. The education sector has been hit hard as well, with four key projects paused, leaving thousands of students and educators in limbo. Similarly, four health programs, many of which catered to underserved communities, are now at a standstill.
US officials have stated that this suspension is temporary and intended to align foreign aid with American interests. President Trump’s executive order, signed at the start of his second term on January 20, claimed a pause for nearly 90-days on foreign development assistance. The order emphasized the need for alignment between aid disbursement and US foreign policy goals. Exceptions were made for emergency food assistance and aid to key Middle Eastern allies, such as Israel and Egypt.
Donald also defended the move, and he restated his administration’s stance that US aid should deliver measurable benefits for the American people. “The United States is no longer going to blindly dole out money with no return,” he stated, signaling a significant shift in US foreign aid policy.
Impacts of US Aid Suspension on Pakistan
The temporary suspension of aid has already started to create ripple effects across Pakistan:
1. Energy Crisis Deepens: With five energy sector projects paused, Pakistan’s ongoing struggle to improve its power supply and reduce load shedding has suffered a severe setback.
2. Agricultural Development Stagnates: The halting of five agricultural projects jeopardizes food security and efforts to modernize farming techniques, potentially impacting rural livelihoods.
3. Governance and Democracy Initiatives Disrupted: The suspension of 11 governance-related programs weakens efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, transparency, and public accountability.
4. Health and Education at Risk: Pausing funding for four health and four education projects leaves vulnerable communities without access to essential services, including medical care and educational resources.
5. Cultural Heritage Preservation Threatened: The halt of cultural preservation projects endangers efforts to protect Pakistan’s rich historical and cultural sites.
As the US reassesses its aid programs, the uncertainty surrounding these projects raises concerns about the long-term implications for Pakistan’s development and its bilateral relations with the United States. The suspension serves as a stark reminder of how global geopolitics can influence the trajectory of local development initiatives.
