A historic partnership between Shell Pakistan and the SOS Technical Training Institute (SOS TTI) resulted in the introduction of an environmentally friendly vehicle, fittingly called “Thunderer,” at a momentous event held at the Infaq Foundation site in Korangi, Karachi.

With this innovative programme, standard academic assignments will significantly change to involve students in practical technical work with vocational schools. The initiative, which was first put out by Shell Pakistan and was confirmed by an agreement in March 2023, represents a noteworthy investment of Rs. 1.3 million with the goal of promoting youth practical engineering abilities.

The “Thunderer,” a sleek single-seater with an aluminium frame, is 4 feet wide and 9.6 feet long. With a 100 CC EFI engine that uses 50 KM of gasoline per litre, it is well-equipped. The car’s development was completed in several stages, most of which were carried out on SOS TTI’s property: design, chassis building, engine installation, wheel rim milling, and the installation of wheels, shocks and a complete brake system. Students and teachers at SOS TTI also worked on electrical projects and created a fibreglass mould for the body.

Students enrolled in the institute’s 12 specialised 6-month courses turned out in large numbers, helping young people from low-income households in Korangi and other parts of Karachi. There were also representatives from the Infaq Foundation, SOS Children’s Villages of Sindh, and Shell Pakistan.

Principal of SOS TTI, Comdr (r) Khalid Wasim, emphasised the project’s educational synergy and its timely completion by the end of April 2024. He underlined how important it was that a vocational institute, as opposed to a traditional engineering university, was chosen to receive the first project of its a kind.

The SOS TTI team was praised by Ms. Nida Tanzeel, Social Performance Manager of Shell Pakistan, for their effectiveness and competence in finishing the project. She reaffirmed Shell’s dedication to helping young men and women get training and develop their ability in technology and related services. The team had performed incredibly well. It is evident that any project’s success is determined by whether it is completed on schedule and within a given budget.

Senator (r) Javed Jabbar, the Chairman of SOS Children’s Villages of Sindh, gave the project high marks and welcomed the charitable donations made by Ms. Ava Cowasjee and other supporters. Additionally, he emphasised the significance of equipping young people with technical skills and encouraging their creativity and invention in the age of AI and machine learning.

Sanaullah Qurieshi, the deceased Chairman of SOS-TTI, was represented by Mr. Yacoob Zamindar, Chairman Emeritus of SOS Sindh, who offered the vote of gratitude.

All of team members in the project were recognised for their contributions to this difficult but worthwhile project. Operating on regular petrol, the “Thunderer” is anticipated to establish a new benchmark for low emissions and fuel efficiency.

This programme not only represents a significant advancement in applied technical education, but it also establishes a standard for future partnerships between businesses and institutions of vocational training.
