In a significant move to improve urban infrastructure, the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has proposed a comprehensive rehabilitation project for Murree Road, estimated at Rs953 million, for the Annual Development Programme (ADP) 2025-26.
According to a senior RDA official, the plan includes repair and carpeting of Murree Road from Flashman’s Hotel to Faizabad, a stretch that has seen significant wear and tear over the past decade. The road was last properly carpeted in 2016, and since then, potholes and broken patches have appeared, especially in high-traffic zones like Marrir Chowk, Naz Cinema, Chandni Chowk, and Shamsabad,” the official said.
Work to Begin After Completion of The Mall Underpass
The rehabilitation work is all set to commence in July 2025, following the completion of The Mall underpass project, which is expected to wrap up by June 2025. The underpass is a key infrastructure development in the area and its timely completion will allow for smooth initiation of the Murree Road upgrade.

Beautification and Roadside Drainage Included
The scheme doesn’t just focus on carpeting. According to RDA Director General Kinza Murtaza, the project also includes:
- Beautification efforts along the main artery
- Construction of roadside drainage systems
- Upgrading key intersections and improving traffic flow
She added, “The RDA has completed the planning phase, and we are only awaiting final approval from the Punjab government to begin execution.”
Motorists Express Concerns
Daily commuters have long complained about the deplorable condition of Murree Road, which serves as a lifeline between Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
“The bumps and potholes are damaging our cars,” as cited by Mohammad Ali, who travels from Liaquat Bagh to Islamabad every day.
“The government should immediately clear areas where construction is done, especially around Saddar, Naz Cinema, and Sixth Road.”
Future Plans: Alternative Routes and Leh Expressway
Ms. Murtaza also unveiled plans for the latest alternative routes between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, including a road connecting Chandni Chowk to Siddiqui Chowk and the long-awaited Leh Expressway project.
The RDA keeps on hoping these efforts will relieve traffic congestion and offer smoother commutes for thousands of residents.
