The Punjab government is poised to redefine the public transportation in Rawalpindi backed by an advanced e-transport system, projected to cost Rs 7 billion. Work on the ambitious project will commence by the end of this month, with 102 electric buses expected to operate across 10 newly designated routes by the close of 2025. These routes will span a total of 86 kilometers, linking key areas of the city, including the airport, railway station, metro bus hubs, general bus stand, Islamabad, and other vital locations.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hasan Waqar Cheema explained that the initial phase involves constructing a state-of-the-art bus depot on 28 canals of land at Siham, near Pirwadhai Morr on Peshawar Road. This depot will serve as the cornerstone of the e-transport initiative and is expected to house modern amenities such as an administration block, drivers’ rest area, vehicle maintenance facilities, electric charging stations, a cafeteria, and a mosque.

“The depot will be ready as soon as possible so the buses can hit the roads promptly once they arrive,” DC Cheema stated. The primary objective of the project, he highlighted, is to reduce pollution in Rawalpindi and its cantonment areas while enhancing connectivity. The e-transport system will also integrate seamlessly with the metro bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, providing citizens with a comprehensive transit network.

Construction of bus stops along the 10 routes will begin shortly, with designs tailored to meet modern standards. DC Cheema assured that work on the bus stations and related infrastructure is anticipated to commence within the next couple of months. The feasibility study for the project, conducted by Nespak, has already been ratified, and efforts are on the verge of completing the project well before the deadline of November 2025.

In addition to environmental benefits, the initiative promises to improve commuter convenience. DC Cheema noted that the buses would feature designated seating areas for women, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities. Specially designed bus stops will ensure accessibility for all segments of society.

Improved accessibility and connectivity

Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary Rashid Ali outlined the 10 routes for the electric buses, which were planned after a thorough survey of passenger needs and pollution levels.

Routes include key corridors such as Rawalpindi Railway Station to Lahore High Court (8.2 km), Koral Chowk to Fawara Chowk (11.3 km), and Saddar to Lalarukh Colony (7.5 km), among others.

Positive views of DC Cheema regarding improved transport system

DC Cheema expressed optimism that the improved transport system, with affordable fares, would encourage citizens to shift from traditional public transport to e-buses, significantly reducing air pollution in the city. He praised the collaboration of various district departments in streamlining the project’s planning and paperwork, emphasizing its importance for Rawalpindi’s future.

This innovative project signals a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility, improving both the environment and the quality of life for residents.
