Pakistan has formally submitted an application to join the BRICS group of nations in 2024, with expectations of Russia’s support during the membership process. Ambassador Muhammad Khalid Jamali, Pakistan’s newly-appointed envoy to Russia, conveyed in an interview with TASS that the country aims to become a member next year, coinciding with Russia’s presidency. While engaging with member countries for general support, Ambassador Jamali emphasized the importance of Russia’s assistance in this endeavor.

He confirmed that Pakistan had already submitted its application for BRICS membership. Established in 2010, BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, representing major emerging economies seeking increased influence in the global order. South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, at the 15th BRICS Summit in August, announced invitations for Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to join, with their full membership slated to commence on January 1, 2024.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov noted that BRICS plans to finalize a list of partner-state candidates during the upcoming summit in Kazan, with a particular focus on expanding the “circle of BRICS friends” during Russia’s chairmanship.
