In a major breakthrough for Pakistan’s space aspirations, the country has officially become the first foreign nation to join China’s space station astronaut training programme. Shafaat Ali has made the official declaration on Friday. He is the Director of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission.

The historic development arises from a recently signed agreement between Pakistan and China, made possible under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The partnership is marking a significant moment in Pakistan’s scientific journey and strengthens the ever-growing bond between the two countries.

Merit-Based Selection of Future Astronauts

As part of the agreement, Pakistan will likely send two astronauts to train in China’s prestigious astronaut programme. Ali emphasized that the selection process will be strictly merit-based, focusing on candidates with exceptional academic and professional credentials.

Eligible candidates include PhD holders, experienced pilots, and graduates who meet the rigorous physical and psychological standards required for space travel. A 3-stage selection process has been designed to identify and prepare the most capable individuals. The final selection is anticipated to be finalized by 2026.

“We are desiring for the very best to represent Pakistan in space,” said Shafaat. “This is not just about sending someone to space — it’s about showcasing the scientific and intellectual potential of our country.”

China Opens the Door for Pakistan

Traditionally, China reserved its astronaut training programme solely for its own citizens. The plan to open it to Pakistan is being considered as a testament to the deep strategic and scientific trust between the two nations.
