According to Chairman Wapda Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), the Mohmand Dam project is expected to be completed in 2026. Construction work is currently progressing on all 11 project sites, day and night on the sites where feasible.

During his visit to the Mohmand Dam project, the chairman was informed that the diversion system is expected to be completed in November of this year, with the project expected to be completed in 2026.

Media reported that the authority is building the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project on the Swat River, upstream of the Munda Headworks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mohmand District. The chairman reviewed construction work on various sites, including the main dam, spillway, reregulation pond, diversion tunnels, access tunnel, powerhouse, power intake, switch yard, and irrigation system, among others, during his visit to the project.

Moreover, Mr Ghani urged the project management to adhere strictly to the specifications laid out for the project’s construction. After reviewing the pre- and post-flood situations, the chairman concluded that concerted efforts are required to complete this megaproject on time. Wapda’s project management, consultants, and the contractor will need to be proactive in this regard, he added.

Afterwards, the GM and PD of the Mohmand Dam project, flanked by consultants and the contractor, provided an update on the project’s progress. It was stated that the majority of the damages incurred to the diversion system by the destructive flood last summer were repaired up until December of last year.

It is to mention that Mohmand Dam is a multi-purpose construction project. When completed, it will hold 1.2 MAF of water and aid in flood mitigation in Charsadda, Peshawar, and Nowshera. It will irrigate 18,237 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda in addition to supplementing 160,000 acres of existing land.

In addition, Mohmand Dam has a generation capacity of 800 MW. It will supply the National Grid with 2.86 billion units of low-cost, eco-friendly hydel electricity per year. The project will also supply Peshawar with 300 million gallons of daily drinking water.
