In a significant development for Pakistan’s trade landscape, the India North Europe Express (INX) maritime service was launched on Wednesday, creating a direct shipping connection between Pakistan and Europe. This groundbreaking service, which will officially begin operations on February 5, is expected to strengthen global trade links and facilitate the swift delivery of Pakistani goods to key European markets.

The INX service features a weekly rotation starting from Karachi and connects ports in India, Sri Lanka, and prominent European destinations such as London Gateway, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Antwerp. Utilizing 6,000 TEU container ships, the service will complete the round trip within 11 weeks, promising improved transit times and greater efficiency.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Vice Admiral Faisal Abbasi HI (M), SI (M), and Commander Karachi of the Pakistan Navy, highlighted the strategic importance of this maritime initiative. Commander Karachi of the Pakistan Navy highlighted Pakistan’s advantageous location at the crossroads of Central Asia, Southwest Asia, and the Persian Gulf, which positions the country as a pivotal player in global trade.

He also discussed the untapped opportunities in Pakistan’s blue economy, particularly through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which promises to further improve the nation’s maritime capabilities.

Sohail Shams, CEO of United Marine Agencies (UMA), which represents HMM in Pakistan, highlighted the transformative potential of the INX service. “This initiative creates a robust, direct maritime connection, reducing transit times and boosting regional trade. Karachi’s strategic position as a trade hub enhances its role in global transshipment opportunities,” Shams explained.

Yang Jungmo, Commercial Chief for Southwest Asia at HMM, called the INX service a significant milestone in simplifying global trade operations. He reiterated the importance of reliable, efficient shipping solutions in today’s interconnected world, emphasizing the shared commitment of international partners to drive progress and innovation in the shipping sector.
