Pakistanis may have spotted images of busy hospital waiting rooms in China on their social media feeds in recent days.

China is currently navigating through a challenging outbreak of the HMPV. It is a virus that heavily attacks the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system of humans leading to feeling under the weather like flu-like symptoms. It is claimed that this virus is spreading swiftly, and it has a strong resemblance to the COVID-19 virus that occurred in 2019.

Current situation in China

Social media reports suggest that hospitals and crematories are stretched thin by this outbreak, with videos showing overcrowded facilities. In addition to HMPV, other respiratory illnesses like influenza A, walking pneumonia, and COVID-19 are reportedly circulating. However, no official state of emergency has been announced yet.

National Disease Control and Prevention Administration responded to this major outbreak and tried to leave no stone unturned to nip the evil in the bud instantly. It has given a monitoring system to monitor cases of pneumonia from unknown origins and stay ahead of the curve. The intention behind this initiative is to enhance readiness and establish better protocols for managing emerging pathogens. Moreover, it also builds on lessons from past struggles and adversity of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Is HMPV?

HMPV is a breathing-related pathogen that has overlapping symptoms akin to the flu. Common signs of this virus:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Shortness of breath

HMPV can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia in very rare cases. 1 out of 100 can be seriously affected. The incubation period starts from 3 to 6 days, and symptoms can last for several days depending on the infection’s severity.

How Does HMPV Spread?

HMPV spreads through:

  • Respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.
  • Close personal contact, such as handshakes.
  • Contaminated surfaces, especially when touching the face afterward.

Certain groups are at higher risk of complications, including:

  • Young children
  • Older adults
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems

When to Seek Medical Attention

According to Cleveland Clinic, you should consult a doctor if:

  • Symptoms persist or worsen after a few days.
  • A fever lasts more than three days without improvement.
  • You or your child have pre-existing conditions that could increase the risk of complications.

Preventive Measures

To reduce the risk of contracting or spreading HMPV, follow these steps:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Maintain distance from individuals showing symptoms of illness.
  • Disinfect surfaces frequently, especially shared items like doorknobs and toys.

If you are thinking that these kinds of symptoms are following you, it’s essential to care of yourself:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Stay home to prevent the spreading of the infection.
  • Avoid sharing personal things like utensils cups, and plates.

Treatment and Vaccine

Presently, there is no vaccine, or treatment developed to cure this virus but the Care centers on managing symptoms and preventing complications, including sipping enough fluids and rest.

HMPV vs. COVID-19

Both HMPV and COVID-19 cause similar breath-related issues, such as fever, congestion, shortness of breath, and cough. However, due to its evolving variants, HMPV rates are excessively high in winter and spring, while COVID-19 spreads without missing any month or season.

This outbreak underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring, proactive prevention, and public awareness in managing emerging respiratory illnesses.
