Pakistan, a land of breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is now open to adventure-seekers like never before. G Adventures has officially launched its first trips to the country, offering travelers an opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of the Karakoram Mountains, hike through remote valleys, and immerse themselves in local village life.
Two of these new trips revolve around the Thallay La Trail, a historic route that once served as the only connection between the ancient kingdoms of Khaplu and Shigar. For centuries, this trail was essential for trade and communication, sustaining local communities. However, with the advent of modern roads, it became less traveled, leaving many villages isolated and without a sustainable source of income.
Recognizing the capacity of responsible tourism, G Adventures has collaborated with local villagers in the Thallay Valley for starting the revival process of this route. The initiative is providing several opportunities to the region, as local residents now work as porters, chefs, and guides, allowing them to earn a livelihood through tourism. Travelers, in turn, will get to experience the area’s untouched beauty, hiking past glaciers, through high-altitude meadows, and alongside grazing yaks and goats.
Beyond the trek, adventurers will have the rare opportunity to stay in historic forts and castles in Khaplu and Shigar, which have been converted into hotels as part of ongoing efforts to boost economic development. These accommodations offer a mix of comfort and history, providing the tourists with the details of the past.
Vice president of product at G Adventures, Yves Marceau emphasized the strong dedication of the organization to sustainable tourism: “While tourism to Pakistan is increasing, many remote communities are still being ignored. Vice president said that he wants to change that by ensuring our trips have a meaningful impact, both culturally and economically.”
For younger travelers, G Adventures has also introduced an 18-to-Thirtysomethings trip, designed for those looking for a mix of adventure and cultural immersion. From savoring street food at women-owned stalls in Lahore to sharing meals with families in Hunza and hiking the Miranjani Peak, this journey provides an authentic taste of Pakistan’s diverse traditions, food cuisines, culture, and other beautiful landscapes.
