A car manufacturer and importer with headquarters in Karachi, Dewan Farooque Motors Limited, has declared its intention to assemble Chinese electric trucks domestically. These trucks, called “Kama,” are anticipated to go on sale in the first quarter of 2025.

According to Kashif Riaz, Director of Projects at Dewan Farooque Motors, the Kama electric vehicle is based on the diesel-powered Shehzore model. Completely built units (CBUs) have already reached Pakistan for testing, in addition to the trucks being locally produced before the official launch.

This light commercial vehicle’s design aims to be both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. It boasts a 300-kilometer range, fast charging capabilities, and eliminates the excessive fuel use usually found in commercial trucks, significantly lowering operating expenses.

Pakistan’s National Electric Vehicles Policy (NEVP), which was introduced in 2019, sets ambitious targets for EV adoption. 30% of all passenger and heavy-duty truck sales are expected to be electric by 2030, with a higher goal of 90% by 2040. The Kama truck, a major turning point in Pakistan’s transition to eco-friendly transportation, achieves these goals.

Riaz emphasised how much Pakistan might produce in the way of electric vehicles. The nation possesses the infrastructure, trained labour force, and resources necessary to achieve 100% localised manufacturing, he said. Pakistan may be able to do away with conventional engines and transmissions by using its plentiful lithium resources and domestic battery production capabilities, opening the door for the nation to export electric cars and parts to other countries.

He also highlighted how widespread EV adoption will benefit the economy and the environment, especially the potential for World Bank carbon credits. However, in order to promote and hasten domestic EV production, Riaz demanded more robust government assistance, including more tariff exemptions.

Compared to conventional diesel trucks, electric trucks have a number of important advantages.

  • Reduced Emissions:

Since electric trucks have no tailpipe emissions, they drastically lower greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. They are therefore a far more environmentally friendly choice.

  • Lower Operating Costs:

In the long run, electric trucks are less expensive, even though the initial expenditure may be costlier. Compared to fuel rates that fluctuate, they offer more consistent and generally reduced energy expenses. Because they have fewer moving components and don’t require oil changes, they also require less maintenance.

  • High Performance:

When compared to their diesel equivalents, electric vehicles frequently exhibit superior acceleration and higher production rates. This is due to the fact that their batteries supply steady power without requiring the burning of fuel.

  • Reduced Noise Pollution:

Electric trucks operate much more quietly than diesel trucks, contributing to lower noise pollution in urban areas.

  • Environmental Leadership:

Companies adopting electric trucks can position themselves as leaders in environmental stewardship, enhancing their reputation with customers and stakeholders.

  • Convenient Charging:

With the expansion of electric infrastructure, charging electric trucks is becoming more convenient, and many can be charged at home or at dedicated charging stations.

For companies trying to lower their operational expenses and environmental effect, electric trucks are an appealing option because of these advantages.
