Diamond lanes planned on Lahore’s roads for bikers following China’s pattern

On all main roads in Lahore, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the creation of ‘diamond lanes’, or special lanes, for motorcycle riders. Her recent trip to China, where she saw a comparable system, served as the impetus for this project.

The Chief Minister told Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb to supervise the concept’s execution after discussing it with cabinet colleagues in a recent meeting. Reducing the rising number of serious motorbike accidents is the aim.

As per an official, the Chief Minister mentioned that she observed biker-only lanes in places like Nanjing and Zhanjiang while she was there.

Head injuries among motorbike riders are a major cause of death and permanent disability, she underlined. Motorcycle safety is a top concern because many people use motorcycles as their main form of transportation.

Ferozepur Road Will See the Start of a Pilot Project:

The Chief Minister emphasised that Beijing’s bike lanes are completely isolated from the city’s major thoroughfares by broad sidewalks. The Senior Minister has started talks to implement this plan in Lahore as per her directives.

The city’s main roadways were recently inspected by senior officials, including Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed and the Director General of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA). With Ferozepur Road serving as a test project, they chose to execute the project on three-lane roadways.

The CTO has assembled specialised traffic police squads to move forward. To create a feasibility study, these teams will work with pertinent departments, including the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) and the LDA.

On important city routes, we are aiming to establish dedicated motorcycle lanes’, the CTO stated. He went on to say that motorcycle riders will be the only ones allowed to use these ‘diamond lanes’. Additionally, awareness efforts will inform cyclists of the value of utilising these lanes. There will be severe penalties for other cars using these lanes.

The concept will be extended to other three-lane roads if the Ferozepur Road pilot project is successful.

These dedicated lanes will help ensure safer travel for motorcyclists by separating them from other vehicles.
