Islamabad’s safe city project is about to get a major upgrade with the addition of 3,200 new AI-powered cameras, enhancing surveillance and crime detection throughout the federal capital.
Director General of Safe City Islamabad, Shakir Hussain Dawar, announced the expansion for the duration of a media briefing on Thursday. He stated the project’s PC-1, worth Rs. 17.4 billion, has been submitted to modernize surveillance using artificial intelligence.
Presently, the capital has 2,758 surveillance cameras, of which 700 are AI-enabled. The new additions will increase the city’s surveillance coverage, incorporating superior features including facial recognition, license plate detection, and traffic violation monitoring.

The upgraded system aims to offer near-overall digital coverage of Islamabad. It’ll create records of people entering the town and help law enforcement respond extra swiftly to incidents.
To address this surge in information, seven high-powered servers are being introduced to the infrastructure. Further, 14 more servers are deliberately allowed to allow older cameras to function with AI abilities.
DG Dawar revealed that AI surveillance is already generating tangible consequences: it has helped perceive 77 criminal gangs, with 32 arrested so far. The upcoming installation of advanced rooftop cameras can even allow the government to capture photographs of individuals inside vehicles more genuinely.
This enlargement signals a new chapter in Islamabad’s public protection method. Reliance on AI tools is developing to ensure efficient policing, higher tracking, and a safer urban environment.
