The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), led by Chairperson Rina Saeed Khan, unveiled the master plan for the Margalla Viewpoint at the Monal site in the Margalla Hills National Park on Wednesday.

The 5th Implementation Committee had unanimously approved the eco-restoration master plan for the Margalla Viewpoint by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB). It is a ground-breaking initiative toward the regeneration of the Margalla Hills in eco-restoration.

The project aims to turn the hills into a vibrant ecosystem that not only stands as a top destination for tourism and leisure but also helps protect the environment. International architect Imrana Tiwana and DB Studio, an Islamabad-based architectural firm, have developed the master plan after several deliberations with all the stakeholders. The master plan has multiple restoration concepts while moving the Margalla Hills back to their natural shape and form.

Vision of the Master Plan

The approved eco-restoration master plan envisions an eco-friendly and sustainable landscape for residents as well as tourists. The features included in the master plan are designed for the recreational and multiple needs of visitors. The features include:

  1. Walking Trails and Promenades
  1. Reflecting Pool and Eco-Display Area
  1. Open-Air Amphitheater
  1. Play Area for Children
  1. Sitting Spaces for Elders
  1. Prayer Area
  1. Visitor Information Center

Progress and Upcoming Steps

An IWMB representative hinted that debris resulting from the dismantling of the mega-restaurants has already been evacuated. In the future, as soon as the rainy season starts, they will clear lantana regularly and engage in rewilding. The activity plan’s timeline adheres to the rainy season as the steps will ensure the regrowth of the natural grass on-site, promoting healthy biodiversity.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Pakistan is taking the lead in fundraising for the project until it becomes well-established. Additionally, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the master plan have been submitted to the Environment Protection Agency.

Commitment to Restoration

The Chairperson of IWMB expressed optimism about the success of this project, inspired by the environmental and communal benefits it promises. “Generational approval of the Master Plan provides the first concrete step toward this project fulfilling its promise of environmental, recreational, and community uplift. We remain committed to regenerating the hills into a thriving green space with community benefits in mind,” she stated.

This project presents a great opportunity to combine ecological regeneration with community use.
