The University of Azad and Kashmir, UAJK, has executed a new dress code policy stopping students from wearing jeans and t-shirts on campus. This initiative, which emphasized preserving the dignity and sanctity of the institution, was drafted in a circular issued on the 29th of August, which recently appeared in front of public attention.

The circular mandates that both staff and students should stick to a dress code that is properly aligned with local cultural and religious values. The AJK University emphasized that the policy is not decided to impose rigidity but is implemented to create discipline, and respect for religious matters.

Specific Dress Code Demands:

For female students, it’s clearly instructed to wear a shalwar kameez dupatta or gown and then come into the campus. Male students should try to wear decent dress defined as dress pants and colored shirts or shalwar kameez.

What is prohibited attire on the campus?

The AJK University has drafted specific clothing items and styles that are not permitted, including.

  • Tight or see-through clothing
  •  Sleeveless shirts or shorts
  • T-shirts or clothing with indecent language or art
  •  Torn clothing
  • Excessive makeup
  • Expensive jewelry
  • Untidy or immodest dress in cafeterias, university offices, and classrooms
  • Unprofessional attire in formal programs and interviews

The policy also considers decorum and safety all over the campus. Students have been strictly advised to adhere to the new rules with the university, warning that disciplinary action will be taken against those who are not properly following the new rules and trying to violate the rules.

This scheme of new dress code policy at the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir will have various positive impacts.

  • Firstly, this scheme emphasizes increasing the reputation of the university by enhancing a disciplined and respectful environment that is completely aligned with cultural and religious values. Furthermore, a consistent dress code is required to create a cohesive and professional atmosphere on campus, contributing to a positive image of the institution.
  • Secondly, it is anticipated to create a sense of inclusivity among students and staff who strictly value these cultural and religious practices.
  • Thirdly, the dress code is anticipated to lead to more disciplined behavior among students as it focuses and aims to ensure conformity and respect by removing flashy and inappropriate attire. The policy is anticipated to minimize distractions and divert the student’s attention to academics.
  • Fourthly, some students might feel resistive to this policy if they view it as overly restrictive and freezing on personal freedom. There may be a period of adjustment as students try to adopt the new dress code, potentially causing initial discomfort and confusion.
  • Fifthly, managing violations and executing disciplinary measures, is anticipated to increase administrative workload and feasible conflicts.
