K-Electric set to double Pakistan’s solar capacity by adding 640MW of clean energy

K-Electric Ltd., Karachi’s main power utility, is set to practically double Pakistan’s solar energy limit by adding 640 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to its portfolio in the upcoming two years, as per Chief Strategy Officer Shahab Qader Khan. 

The bidding system for the first tasks begins on August 19, with plans to incorporate 200 MW of hybrid solar wind generation. 

Pakistan’s dependence on expensive fossil fuel imports has driven power costs skywards, with monthly charges expanding by 155% since 2021. 

K-Electric is looking for proposals for a hybrid solar and wind energy project. The development of solar capacity is supposed to lessen general power costs. Over the next five years, K-Electric intends to add 1,200 megawatts of power to its system.
