Car Sales Plunged By A Significant 44% In July-Sept

In the wake of economic challenges and changing market dynamics, Pakistan’s automotive industry faced a substantial downturn during the July-September quarter. Car sales, which serve as a crucial indicator of the country’s economic health, plunged by a significant 44% in this period. This decline extended to other segments of the automotive sector as well, including jeeps, SUVs, and pickups, which experienced a 23% drop in sales.

The broader industry saw no reprieve, as sales of trucks plummeted by a staggering 47%, followed by a 32% drop in bus sales, and a 10% decrease in two- and three-wheeler sales. This underwhelming performance has raised concerns about the overall health of the Pakistani economy.

During the July-September quarter of FY24, the total car sales in Pakistan amounted to 16,021 units, marking a substantial decrease from the 28,571 units sold in the same period during the previous fiscal year. These numbers paint a grim picture for an industry that has historically been a significant contributor to Pakistan’s economic landscape.

To shed light on this situation, it’s important to analyze both the monthly and yearly sales trends. While the year-on-year comparison is indicative of the industry’s overall performance, the month-on-month figures reveal important insights into the automotive market. During August and September, there was a slight uptick in sales. These month-on-month increases were met with cautious optimism, as they offered a ray of hope for a struggling industry.

Several factors contribute to this complex scenario. One significant driver of the monthly sales rebound was the easing of completely knocked down (CKD) import issues. A reduction in these import challenges led to more units available in the market and provided buyers with a broader selection.

As a result, those consumers who were holding back on their purchases due to a lack of vehicle availability found themselves in a position to enter the market.
