The Sindh government plans to launch an electric taxi service in Karachi soon to provide residents with modern, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation options.
Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced after inspecting work on the built corridor for the city’s Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service.
He stated that the launch of a new and cheaper cab service had become even more critical after existing ride-hailing services had dramatically increased their fares.
The minister added that the Sindh government had been working hard to introduce a new environmentally friendly and comfortable cab service in Karachi. The project would be completed very soon.
He told reporters that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership had asked the Sindh government to expedite the completion of transportation-related projects in the city so that Karachi residents could enjoy modern mass-transit services.
He further stated that the Sindh government had done its best to fulfill its obligations regarding the provision of mass transportation facilities, citing them as one of the people’s basic needs.
Furthermore, Memon mentioned that the Sindh government was spending billions of rupees to provide residents with modern and comfortable mass-transit services and that the Sindh Mass-Transit Authority (SMTA) had been working around the clock to increase the number of modern buses in Karachi and complete the infrastructure for mass-transit projects.
He stated that the Red Line project was 22 kilometers long and was being built from Malir Halt to the Numaish intersection. He added that it would be Pakistan’s first-ever mass transit service powered by clean biogas, for which a biogas production plant would be built soon.
He added that the Sindh government would soon introduce an electric bus service in Karachi. Regarding another BRT project, the Yellow Line, the transport minister said the paperwork for the project was being finalized in collaboration with the World Bank. Soon, work would also start on it.
